OTP 2021 Hub - Derby Museum

Derby Museums is very excited to be part of the Outing the Past Festival for the first time. We’re hoping that our virtual event on the 13th February 2021, will be a big step forwards in developing relationships with LGBTQ+ communities in Derby, Derbyshire and beyond.

To that end, we’ve been busy preparing for our event by talking to LGBTQ+ led organisations and developing ideas together. We’re excited that at least part of the event will be created in collaboration with local community members.

We’ve been researching our collections, and sites, and connecting to the work already done by local LGBTQ+ groups exploring LGBTQ+ histories. We have a fantastic painting by Derek Jarman called Avebury Series II which he painted in 1973. This is currently on loan to Manchester Art Gallery for an exhibition called Derek Jarman Protest! which is scheduled to open on the 21st May 2021.

We’ve recently found out that the Chevalier d’Eon visited Derby in 1771 and possibly visited the site of Derby’s Silk Mill. This site is undergoing major redevelopment and will open as a new Museum of Making in Spring 2021. More information and items relating to this incredible individual can be found within the British Museum’s Love, Desire, Identity: LGBTQ histories trail. https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/desire-love-and-identity/chevalier-deon

We are looking forward to finding out much more in the lead up to LGBTQ+ History Month and sharing our learning alongside the fantastic presentations that will be part of our event.

Derby Museums is for the thinker and maker in all of us. Together we make museums for the head, heart and hands. We do this by being independent, fostering a spirit of experimentation, pursuing mutual relationships, creating the conditions for well-being (helping people connect with others, keep learning, take notice of the world and give back to the community) and proving that we are doing it.

We are responsible for three sites in the centre of Derby: the Museum and Art Gallery opened in 1879, Pickford’s House, an Architect’s home built in 1770, and the soon to open Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill. The Museum of Making is near completion following a £17million renovation and marks the gateway to the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. We are an Accredited Museum, an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation with a Designated Collection of the works of Joseph Wright.
